Why Plexi-Craft Doesn’t Produce the Ghost Chair — And What a Designer Should Choose Instead

Transparent ghost-style acrylic chair with modern minimalist design

In the acrylic furniture world, “ghost chair” has become a catch-all term for a specific style of seating: a single-piece molded acrylic or polycarbonate chair with a traditional silhouette, often inspired by antique designs. They are produced quickly, stacked efficiently, shipped in bulk from overseas factories, and sold at mass-market prices.

Ghost chairs have their place — event rentals, temporary installations, casual hospitality settings. But they are not designed for luxury interiors, and they are not what Plexi-Craft makes. This post explains why, and what we offer designers instead.

What Makes a Ghost Chair Different

Ghost chairs are manufactured through injection molding — a high-volume process that pushes melted polycarbonate or thin acrylic into a mold to produce identical units at speed. The result is a lightweight, stackable chair that can be made by the thousands and shipped affordably from overseas.

The most well-known versions — including the Kartell Louis Ghost Chair, the Kartell Victoria Ghost Chair, and the Philippe Starck Ghost Chair — are sold widely through retailers like CB2, Design Within Reach, Wayfair, and Amazon. You may also see them marketed as a clear acrylic side chairtransparent polycarbonate dining chairlucite ghost chairclear plastic chair, or acrylic ghost chair replica. The name varies; the product is the same — a thin, molded, mass-produced form built for volume and logistics, not for the demands of a high-end interior.

The tradeoffs are real. Thinner injection-molded acrylic is more prone to surface scratches, stress marks, and long-term yellowing — particularly in sunlit rooms or coastal homes where UV exposure is constant. The manufacturing process is optimized for volume and logistics, not precision joinery, custom sizing, or the optical clarity that defines premium acrylic work. And because every unit is identical, there is no room for the custom dimensions, material combinations, or design details that luxury projects require.

Unlike mass-produced options from retailers like Kartell, CB2, or Amazon, every Plexi-Craft chair is built to order in Chicago from thick, premium-grade North American acrylic — cut, hand-polished, and assembled by the same team that has been doing this work for over 60 years.

Why Plexi-Craft Takes a Different Approach

Plexi-Craft does not produce ghost chairs because our entire operation is built around the opposite model. Every acrylic chair we make is fabricated from premium-grade North American acrylic, cut to size, hand-polished, and assembled in our Chicago workshop. We use thick solid acrylic for strength, stability, and a flawless optical finish that thinner molded material cannot achieve.

  • No mass production — every piece is a single order
  • No overseas imports — fabricated entirely in the USA
  • No compromise in clarity or strength — UV-stable acrylic that will not yellow
  • Every piece made to order — exact dimensions, custom details, designer specifications

This is the same approach we apply to every piece in our collection — from acrylic coffee tables to lucite consoles to custom display cases. The chairs are built to the same standard.

For Designers Who Expect More

If you are specifying seating for a luxury residential project, a boutique hotel, or a high-end commercial space, the ghost chair is the wrong tool. The material is too thin, the finish too variable, and the form too generic to hold up in a considered interior over time.

Plexi-Craft’s made-to-order acrylic seating is built for exactly these projects. Whether it is a clear acrylic dining chair for a formal room, a lucite armchair for a statement corner, or an acrylic chair with a cushion matched to the client’s fabric, every piece is proportioned for the space, finished to a standard that holds up under scrutiny, and backed by over 60 years of fabrication expertise.

The Plexi-Craft Alternative to Ghost Chairs

Instead of molded, mass-produced forms, we offer:

  • Clear acrylic armchairs with substantial profiles and hand-polished edges
  • Lucite accent chairs built to custom dimensions for any floor plan
  • Transparent acrylic dining chairs in a range of silhouettes — from clean geometric forms to classically inspired profiles
  • Mixed-material chairs combining acrylic with brass, gold hardware, or upholstered seats for clients who want layered glamour

Every chair is fabricated from the same premium acrylic used across our full collection, so designers specifying multiple pieces — chairs alongside a dining table, a coffee table, or a console — get a visually cohesive result with matching clarity, polish, and optical character throughout the space.
