Will Acrylic Furniture Scratch, Crack, or Yellow?

Acrylic is extremely durable, but it does scratch more easily than glass — so it’s a fair question. The important distinction is that small surface scratches are easy to fix. A product like Novus plastic polish, applied with a soft cloth, removes most minor scratches and restores the original clarity. Clients who do a light polish every few months keep their pieces looking new indefinitely.

Two things acrylic will not do: yellow over time, and shatter under impact. The acrylic we use at Plexi-Craft is UV-stable, meaning direct sunlight will not cause it to cloud or discolor — even in a south-facing room or a beach house with all-day sun exposure. And unlike glass, acrylic is up to 17 times more impact resistant, so it won’t crack or shatter if something hits it. For high-traffic spaces and homes with kids, that matters.

How Strong Is Acrylic Furniture?

This surprises most people: thick acrylic is extraordinarily strong. Custom acrylic benches and tables from Plexi-Craft regularly hold several hundred pounds without any deformation or stress. We recently built a foyer table that held over 325 pounds — and it still looked like it was floating.

The key is material thickness. Thicker acrylic stock dramatically increases load capacity while adding very little visual weight since the material remains clear. At half the weight of comparable glass, a thick acrylic table top is easier to install and ship than its glass equivalent, without any sacrifice in structural performance.

For projects where a piece needs to carry significant weight and still read as open and light in the room — a heavily styled console, a display case, a foyer anchor — acrylic is often the best choice available.

Can I Customize Acrylic Pieces?

Fully. Every Plexi-Craft piece is built to order — there is no stock to choose from. That means designers have complete control over dimensions, shape, edge profile, material combinations, and finish.

Common customizations we build regularly:

• Curved and radius edges — softened profiles for transitional and organic interiors
• Colored acrylic tints — smoked, bronze, rose, and custom colors available
• Mixed materials — acrylic combined with brass, wood, steel, or glass tops

How Long Does It Take to Make a Custom Acrylic Piece?

Most custom pieces have a lead time of six to eight weeks, depending on complexity and current production volume. Rush production is available for a fee — contact us directly to discuss timeline if a project has a hard installation date.

How Do You Clean and Care for Acrylic Furniture?

Acrylic is one of the easiest furniture materials to maintain. Day-to-day cleaning requires only a soft cloth and mild soap and water — nothing abrasive, no ammonia-based cleaners, no rough sponges. Wipe dry after cleaning to avoid water spots.

For light surface scratches, Novus plastic polish (available at most hardware stores) removes them quickly and restores the original surface clarity. A light polish twice a year keeps high-use pieces looking as good as the day they were delivered.

What to avoid:

• Windex or ammonia-based glass cleaners — these cloud acrylic over time
• Abrasive scrub pads or steel wool
• Dragging objects across the surface without a felt pad underneath
• Harsh solvents like acetone or alcohol
